(Jan. 7, 2010) The boys varsity basketball team stayed close against Dennis-Yarmouth for three quarters last Wednesday, but were plagued by turnovers down the stretch as the visiting Dolphins pulled away for a 56-33 win.

The Whalers, now 2-4 on the season, were scheduled to host a tough Cape Cod Academy team yesterday, too late for this edition of Sports.

“We’re young and inexperienced. We turn the ball over a lot, and a lot of those turnovers they scored on,” head coach Beau Almodobar said of his team’s 19 miscues to D-Y’s 15. “Once we take care of the basketball, we’ll be a pretty good team. That’s our Achilles heel right now. Our goal is 10 turnovers or less. Against the teams we’ve lost to, we had more than 15.”

On the positive side, Almodobar said he was pleased with the team’s hustle and tough defense. Led by freshman Terrel Correia’s 10 boards, the Whalers out-rebounded the Dolphins 32-31.

“I’m pretty happy with the way we’re hustling and playing tough defense. We’re getting turnovers. It’s also big for us to out-rebound a team. We didn’t do that last week. But we have to find ways to be more offensively oriented,” Almodobar said.
