Pirates stomp girls basketball

(Jan. 7, 2010) Playing against some of the toughest competition in Division IV, the varsity girls basketball team fell for the second time in the Cohasset Tournament last Tuesday night, losing to Hull 64-30.

After falling to the host team the day before, the Whalers continued to struggle on the offensive end, shooting 12-for-64 (19 percent) from the field, while turning the ball over 20 times, mostly against the press.

Despite the two losses, Bianca Brown was a bright spot for Nantucket. The senior starter earned tournament all-star honors over the two games, scoring nine points and pulling down 15 rebounds against Cohasset, and adding six points and 14 boards against Hull.

The Whalers (2-2) were looking to get back on track yesterday against league foe Cape Cod Academy, too late for this edition of Sports. On tap for the varsity squad this weekend is a home date with South Shore Voke Saturday.

On the schedule to provide tough early-season competition, the vacation-week tournament was a wake-up call for the Whalers.
