Jeff Chase drives to the hoop during the second half of last Wednesday’s 57-19 junior varsity boys basketball loss to Dennis-Yarmouth.

(Jan. 7, 2010) The boys JV basketball team spent most of its practice time this week focusing on fundamentals, after being soundly defeated by Dennis-Yarmouth 57-19 at home last Wednesday.

The Whalers, now 1-2, were out-rebounded by a wide margin for the second game in a row, leading to numerous second-chance points and fast-breaks by the visiting Dolphins.

Saturday’s game against Hull was postponed due to inclement weather. The JV team was scheduled to host Cape Cod Academy yesterday, too late for this edition of Sports.

“I told them after the game that they have to trust that the offense will come on its own, that they have to concentrate on hard-nosed defense. That’s going to be our goal for the rest of the season,” head coach John Stanton said. “In JV, you want to win, but you want to teach basketball, and prepare your team for the varsity. If they’re better next year when they step on the floor, then we did our job.”
