(Jan. 14, 2010) The high-school ice hockey team earned its first varsity win Saturday, taking down South Shore Voke at home 4-1. The Whalers hit the ice the next day and lost to the Harwich varsity squad by the same score.
Nantucket improved to 3-2 overall, 1-2 in varsity games and 2-0 in junior varsity contests.
“We weren’t quite sure what to expect going into the varsity program this year. We knew there would be games we would have to notch as learning experiences. They stepped up to the plate (Saturday) and did a great job. It goes to show them, they can compete with these varsity-level teams without a problem once they get that self-confidence,” head coach Jack Moran said.
After playing a well-rounded and physical game Saturday, the Whalers looked tentative Sunday against Harwich.
