(Jan. 21, 2010) The girls varsity basketball team has found its groove. The Whalers returned this week to the dominant form they displayed all last season, sweeping three easy victories from Sacred Heart 68-42, Dennis-Yarmouth 63-30 and Norfolk 64-45.
“We are playing much better. It just takes time together. It has taken a little while to see who was going to lead and right now we have four kids scoring on a consistent basis,” head coach Willis Ferreira said. “Early in the year we were still looking for someone to step up. They are getting a little more comfortable and confident with each other and when they play like that, they are pretty good. When you have four kids that can score, it makes it a little easier.”
Shantel Hanniford and Jessica Halford have been leading the way in the scoring column, while Lindsay Fry has been working the perimeter effectively and Bianca Brown is putting up points and controlling the boards. The Whalers, who improved to 7-2 overall, have now won five straight, scoring an average of 61.8 points per game, while allowing only 32.4.
The Whalers’ already short bench got even smaller this week with injuries to Drew Moore and Ashley Symer. The remaining squad will look to continue the hot streak when they host Lighthouse Conference Provincetown Friday night and Sacred Heart Saturday.
