(Jan. 21, 2010) Playing three games in three days against various levels of competition, the junior varsity ice-hockey team saw mixed results. The Whalers earned their first shutout of the season Friday night at home over the Dennis-Yarmouth junior varsity, but then had trouble keeping up with the Blue Hills varsity in a 13-2 loss on the road Saturday. On Sunday, Nantucket rebounded and with tired legs still managed to hold off the Cape Cod Tech varsity 3-2, also on the road.

The Whalers improved to 5-3 overall, 2-3 in varsity games and 3-0 in junior-varsity contests this season. Nantucket already has an eye on this weekend’s games, when the Martha’s Vineyard junior varsity team comes to the island for two match-ups at Nantucket Ice, Saturday at 5 p.m. and Sunday at 10:30 a.m. The Whalers defeated their island rivals handily on the road in December, 8-4.

“As always with Vineyard games, it will be very interesting. I don’t know what the coach has planned as far as who he is going to add to his team, but if we keep the teams the same as they were last time, it should be a very eventful game,” head coach Jack Moran said.

The Whalers had a busy holiday weekend, playing three games in a row starting with the Dennis-Yarmouth junior varsity at home Friday night.
