(Jan. 28, 2010) The varsity boys basketball team snapped a six-game losing streak Friday night with an easy victory over Lighthouse Conference opponent Provincetown, 66-46 on the road.
“Whenever you get a win it gives you confidence, and that’s what we needed, a little confidence,” head coach Beau Almodobar said.
The victory, which was the first for the Whalers since a win over Chatham at the Mashpee Christmas Tournament, lifted the team’s record to 3-8 overall and 2-1 in the league. Monday’s non-conference match-up against Mashpee was postponed due to inclement weather, giving the Whalers a more than a week out of game action.
It will be an important week for the varsity squad, which is scheduled to visit Cape Cod Academy Monday for an important league battle. The Whalers suffered a crucial loss in the first meeting at home 62-42 earlier this month.
Nantucket will need a victory Monday to stay in the running for a share of the league title and a chance to go to the postseason tournament.
“That decides the league title whether we share it or not. We have to beat Sturgis too, but that will determine the league title, so we will be gearing up for that. Our main focus shifts to them,” Almodobar said.
