(Jan. 28, 2010) Martha’s Vineyard’s JV ice hockey team invaded the island last weekend, and the Whalers protected their home ice in front of a large crowd Saturday night, fighting off their arch-rivals in a 3-0 victory. But in the Sunday matinee, the Vineyard came from behind in the third period to steal a 3-3 tie from Nantucket.
Despite the dissatisfying deadlock Sunday, the Whalers have turned the tables on the junior-varsity rivalry that was dominated by the Vineyard in the first few years of the Nantucket program, winning three straight match-ups before the tie.
The Whalers were in control of the puck in both games this weekend, putting 38 shots on net in Saturday’s win and taking 49 shots during Sunday’s tie, but Vineyard goalie Mike Sylvia kept things close.
“Their goalie played two great games. He was really strong in there. We threw a lot at him and he was able to defend the net almost perfectly,” head coach Jack Moran said.
The Vineyard meanwhile put only 11 shots on net in the shutout Saturday and 14 shots on net Sunday. Whaler goalies Christian Lombardi and Casey Kurash split time in goal this weekend, with Lombardi playing the majority of Saturday’s shutout and Kurash guarding the posts Sunday.
