(Feb. 4, 2010) The girls varsity basketball team tacked on three more wins this week, extending its victory streak to nine straight and qualifying for the Division IV South Sectional postseason tournament. The Whalers cruised to wins over South Shore Voke 73-35 and Cape Cod Academy 67-10, before earning a 70-44 victory in a more challenging matchup against Mashpee.

Nantucket ran the court, put up big points early and worked hard on the defensive end en route to the double-digit victories this week. Sophomore point guard Jessica Halford has taken over in the scorebook, scoring 19 against South Shore Voke, 21 against Cape Cod Academy and 22 against Mashpee.

The Whalers, who improved to 11-2 overall (4-0 in the Lighthouse Conference) automatically qualified for the postseason Monday night with their 10th win of the season. Nantucket will continue the busy stretch of games this week as it hosts Sturgis today before traveling to Norfolk Saturday and then returning home to host Sacred Heart Sunday.

The varsity squad faced its first real test on the court since Christmas against Mashpee Tuesday night. The Falcons were hitting their shots and pushing the Whalers off the boards and had the lead as late as midway through the second quarter, 20-19.
