A physically imposing and athletically skilled boys lacrosse team hit the field last week with goals of challenging for a Maritime League title and returning to the playoffs for the second straight season.

The Whalers lost an experienced 10-player senior class to graduation last spring, which included the top three goal-scorers and the starting goalie. But there is no shortage of talent returning to the field this season with 13 lettermen back on the team with a quest for postseason success.

“I think there is a more mature, more determined attitude this year than maybe we have seen in the past,” head coach Rick Blair said.
The Whalers, who were eliminated from the Division III East Sectional tournament in the quarterfinal round last season, are scheduled to open the regular season at Falmouth Saturday.

Forty-eight players showed up to the first day of practice last week and as of early this week the varsity roster was comprised of 21 players. There are nine returning seniors and five juniors on this year’s squad with plenty of experience from last season’s playoff run. Positions have been shuffled slightly across the field as the Whalers look to fill the holes left by last year’s graduates.
