It wasn’t an easy draw to start the season for the girls lacrosse team, which fell to Cohasset in the home opener 14-5 Saturday. Despite the loss, the Whalers showed strength on the defensive end and signs of life on the attack.

“I thought there were a lot of shining spots throughout the game. It was basically our transition we just couldn’t get going,” head coach Amy Knapp said.

The varsity girls lacrosse team (0-1) had some indication of what they would be up against after playing against the Skippers two weeks ago in the Falmouth scrimmages.

“I really just wanted the girls to come out and realize there are certain areas in our field play that we have gaps we need to work on,” Knapp said.

The basic skills identified Saturday were winning draws, picking up ground balls and transition from the defensive end to offense. Knapp praised her relatively new defense for a solid game against Cohasset, considering that they were forced to deal with the Skippers’ total control of possession.
