New Bedford bests JV girls lacrosse, 8-1

The junior varsity girls lacrosse team showed improvement in its second game this season, but still lost at New Bedford last Thursday, 8-1.

“The girls played well. Their defense definitely stepped it up,” head coach Jess Marabella said. “Diana (Puodziukynaite) had a great game staying on the attacker’s right side and making their attack try to shoot left-handed, which obviously (goalie) Kate (Freed) was able to stop.”

Freed made eight saves in the game.

It took Nantucket the first half to get comfortable against the aggressive style of play of New Bedford.

“We were a little complacent on the field in terms of, if there is a ball on the ground we don’t go for it right away. Our girls need to be more aggressive,” Marabella said. “New Bedford is a tough team. They like to push. They did come off complaining, but they went back out there and they used their bodies and got more ground balls.”
