The varsity softball team earned two easy victories to open the regular season this week, taking down Chatham 15-2 Friday and Sturgis 16-0 Tuesday, both in slaughter-rule-shortened five-inning games.
In both contests the Whalers’ bats were active throughout, but really came alive late, scoring 15 of the 31 total runs in the two fourth innings. The top of the lineup has been particularly damaging, hitting .600 out of the top four spots.
Meanwhile, Nantucket pitchers Kelly Reid and Morgan Tornovish have dominated from the circle. Reid held Chatham to only two hits Friday and Tornovish flirted with a no-hitter, allowing only one hit in the fourth inning of Tuesday’s shutout.
The Whalers (2-0) will face their first real challenge of the season when they travel to Bishop Connolly Saturday.
“Saturday will be a good test for us to see if everything we are doing is the right thing or not. We know they have decent pitching. We played them in a doubleheader last year. They beat us in the first game and they were coming back in that second game. We know they can play good softball and that’s the kind of teams we want to play,” head coach Chris Maury said.
