Red Raiders rock boys lax for a loss

The boys varsity lacrosse team suffered a tough loss at Barnstable Tuesday afternoon, falling to the Maritime League front-runners 21-7.

“They are just a really good team. I would say this is the best all-around Barnstable team we have seen,” head coach Rich Blair said. “I think realistically in the Maritime League, Barnstable is going to be a tall order for anyone else to compete with. They play the game at a much higher level than some of the other teams.”

Also this week the Whalers, who moved to 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the conference, easily defeated league opponent Fairhaven last Wednesday, 14-4.
The varsity squad has two games remaining before a brief spring vacation break. They are scheduled to host Dennis-Yarmouth tonight and visit Bourne Saturday.

Against Barnstable Tuesday, the Whalers’ inexperience was exposed against the top-rated program as the Red Raiders ran away with the lead by the second quarter.

Nantucket kept pace for much of the first quarter, taking equal shots on net despite falling behind 4-0. But in the second quarter the Whalers, who were missing a few players, fell out of contention. The traditionally-strong midfield gave way and exposed the struggling defense.
