It was a difficult end to the first stretch of the season for the girls varsity lacrosse team this week. After winning two straight games last week, the Whalers lost twice at home, falling to Maritime League opponents Bourne Monday 16-10 and Barnstable Tuesday 17-5.

Missing key players for early spring vacation, injuries and illness, the Whalers (2-5) struggled to keep pace with the visiting teams, especially late in both games. The Whalers got off to quick starts, scoring first in each, but could not carry the momentum through the full 50 minutes.

The squad has a full two weeks before they are back in action following the spring-vacation break. Nantucket will look to get back on the winning track when its hosts Bridgewater-Raynham Tuesday, April 27.

“We played solidly against them when they came to visit us here last year, so I hope we can continue that,” head coach Amy Knapp said.

The Whalers’ struggles were most evident Tuesday against Barnstable.
