The girls junior varsity lacrosse team still does not have a win under its belt this season, but the improvement through the first four games has been noteworthy. In two close games at home this week, the Whalers fell to Bourne 4-1 Monday and Barnstable 5-3 Tuesday and are now 0-4 this season.
Despite the losses, Nantucket is showing improvement moving the ball and creating offensive opportunities.
“They are doing much better. They did much better in terms of passing the ball, passing it around making sure everybody got the ball and not just going straight to goal,” head coach Jess Marabella said. “The defense still has to work on it. They have got to have more confidence in themselves.”
The Whalers, who are not scheduled to play another game until May 1 against the same Barnstable squad, got the first goal of the game only one minute in Tuesday. Despite the quick start, Nantucket allowed the Red Raiders to take over the game and score three times before the half. In the second half, Nantucket could not catch up, but tallied two goals before the final whistle.
Julia Newman, Cara Garufi and Tasha Grosshans put the ball in the net for the Whalers. On the other end of the field, goalie Kate Freed made nine stops between the pipes.
