Softball rips down Cougars 13-2

The varsity softball team passed its first real test of the regular season Saturday afternoon, posting a 13-2 victory at Bishop Connolly. The Whalers also improved on their perfect start with a 19-1 five-inning victory at Provincetown Monday.

“We feel good, but we know we have tougher opponents coming up and we will just keep working on the things we are working on,” head coach Chris Maury said of the undefeated team. “They seem very focused and very dedicated to what we are doing.”

Nantucket (4-0) hit the ball well against tough pitching Saturday, knocking 16 hits including six extra-base hits en route to the win. But on Monday the Whalers matched up against a struggling Provincetown program and were dealt 23 walks. They managed eight hits off the few balls they saw in the strike zone, and cruised to the easy victory.

“We really didn’t hit the ball that well. It is hard when you go from good pitching to not so good pitching,” Maury said. “It is frustrating, but I give the girls a lot of credit because they kept a good focus and they did what we asked them to do. They didn’t chase a lot of bad pitches. We bunted well. We ran the bases well.”
