Tim Marsh gets picked off first base in the fifth inning of Monday’s game against Harwich in the Cape & Islands Tournament at Upper Cape. Base runners were hard to come by in the four-hit pitchers’ duel. Four runners were picked off in the game – two Whalers and two Rough Riders. The Whalers scored three times in the first two innings and held on for the shutout win.

At least one Nantucket High School athletic team was productive over the spring vacation week. While most of the Whalers took a break from their respective fields, the varsity baseball squad won two games to earn the title in the four-team Cape & Islands Tournament early this week at Doran Park at Upper Cape High School.

The Whalers came out on top in a 3-0 pitchers’ duel against Harwich Monday, and then broke out to defeat Cape Cod Tech 9-2 Tuesday. The Crusaders beat Upper Cape 11-1 in the first game Monday to earn a date with Nantucket.

“It is a big plus. These guys are all pumped up,” head coach Nick Duarte said following the win. “They figured out how to win. I am proud these guys are learning how to win. It is big for us to win this tournament.”

The Whalers suffered a setback last Wednesday when Blue Hills was the second team this season to come from behind in the late innings to earn victory over Nantucket. The Warriors scored twice in the seventh to take the 4-3 win.
