The dominating start to the season continued for the varsity softball team last week. The Whalers belted their way to two more wins, taking down Blue Hills 17-2 last Wednesday and Dennis-Yarmouth 14-4 Friday, both on the road to a perfect 6-0 record.
Nantucket has so far this season outscored its opponents 94-11 and won by an average of almost 14 runs per game. The squad has been tearing the cover off the ball in recent games against decent pitching. The lineup tallied 20 hits against Blue Hills and 14 hits, including three home runs (two grand slams) against Division II Dennis-Yarmouth.
“On the offensive end, we work real hard on hitting. It is real nice to see everyone clue in the way we are right now. The better pitching we see, the better we hit the ball. When we struggle it is against someone who is not throwing the ball real hard,” head coach Chris Maury said.
The Whalers have not yet really enjoyed the comforts of a home-field advantage, playing most of their games on the road over the first month of the season. Five of the Whalers’ six wins have come off-island, where the squad looks to get out in front early and often.
“We try to put our best offensive line-up together for road trips. If you can get out in front with Kelly (Reid) pitching you know you are in good shape,” Maury said.
