The softball team hasn’t seen much of its home field this spring, playing five of its first six games on the road. But it hasn’t been an issue for the seasoned group of players, as the Whalers improved to 4-2 following an easy 25-3 victory at Provincetown last Wednesday.
After opening the season 0-2, the road warriors have found a groove in four straight victories, all away from the confines of their home field.
Wednesday’s win over Provincetown was the second slaughter-rule-shortened game within a week.
“It gave everyone a chance to play. We had a lot of people contributing on the offensive end,” head coach Chris Maury said. “Sometimes we struggle when we face slower pitching and I thought the kids did a great job of relaxing and not trying to kill the ball. We had nice clean singles and ran the bases well.”
Lindsay Fry and Jessica Guevara led the offensive attack for the Whalers. Fry had four hits in five at-bats, knocking a double and home run for five RBI and four runs scored. Guevara was a perfect 6-for-6 with six singles, five RBI and four runs scored.
Guevara also got the start in the circle for the Whalers, pitching six innings, while allowing two hits and three walks and striking out four.
Nantucket took the lead early to give the senior pitcher plenty of breathing room. The Whalers scored four times in the first, twice in the second, seven in the third and two in the fifth to open up the 15-0 advantage.
The Whalers needed three outs to close the game in five innings, but the Fishermen took advantage of Nantucket’s only error of the game to score once and force a sixth inning.
In the top of the sixth, Nantucket tallied 10 runs on seven hits to put things out of reach for good.
Also contributing strong offensive performances for the Whalers, Ashley Clinger was 3-for-3 with two runs scored, Angela Paterson and Parinda Darden were 2-for-2 with three runs scored each and Halie Ciarmataro was 2-for-3.
The Whalers will look to pick up where they left off after school vacation week when they visit Blue Hills next Thursday.
