The varsity sailing team competed in the double-handed fleet racing New England Championships qualifying round Saturday on Lewis Bay at the Hyannis Yacht Club and finished eighth overall, missing the top-three cut.
Before spring vacation, the Whalers traveled to New Bedford to team-race against programs from the Cape & Islands West including Dartmouth, Bishop Stang and arch-rival Martha’s Vineyard. Nantucket defeated the Vineyard 2-1, but fell to Dartmouth and Bishop Stang 2-0.
Despite not making the cut to challenge for the O’Day Trophy Sunday, the Whalers are currently in third place in the Cape & Islands East division with a 5-3 record. The top four teams from the east and west divisions will qualify to compete in the first Cape & Islands Team Racing Championships in late May. Nantucket is 6-5 overall this season and ranked 26th in New England.
The Whalers traveled to the Hyannis Yacht Club Saturday to compete at one of five championship-qualifying sites that were held throughout New England Saturday for the O’Day Trophy. Sixty total schools competed between the five sites that included Lewis Bay, Narragansett Bay (R.I.), Charles River, Hotchkiss School (Conn.) and Sail Maine.
