Lions tame JV baseball

Playing in its first games since early April, the junior varsity baseball team lost twice this week, falling at home to Pope John Paul II 15-0 last Wednesday and on the road at Mashpee 13-0 Friday.

The short-handed Whalers, who fell to 0-3 this season, managed only one hit in the two five-inning games, a lead-off single by Jack Decker against Pope John Paul.

“Obviously you want to see your players get better and that’s where we are at right now. I want to see each player, I want to see them be scrappy, get dirty, and get better,” head coach Dennis Caron said. “We have kids with potential. You want to see them develop and get better.”

The young Whalers were over-matched in both games this week. Against Mashpee Friday, Nantucket was in the game early behind starting pitcher LaMarcus Lewis, trailing only 4-0 after three innings.

“Mashpee is a good team. They hit the ball very well. Our kids played as hard as they could. We didn’t make an errors so that was good. We just didn’t hit the ball very well,” Caron said.
