The Whalers sailing team hosted Tabor Academy’s varsity and junior varsity Saturday afternoon. Tabor, currently ranked third in New England in high school team racing with a 19-3 record, defeated the Whalers 5-0. On Sunday, Nantucket traveled to Hyannis to compete against Barnstable and Martha’s Vineyard. The Red Raiders bested the Whalers 3-2, while Nantucket defeated the Vineyard in three straight races to make the series record 2-0 in favor of Nantucket.

The Whalers evened their record at 7-7 overall this season and currently sit in third place in the Cape & Islands East. Nantucket is scheduled to host Harwich Monday. A victory would qualify the squad for the first ever Cape & Islands Team-Racing Championship at the end of the season.

Also next week, on Friday, May 14, the Whalers will host the first-ever Cape & Islands Women’s Fleet Racing Championship starting at 3 p.m.

Saturday’s regatta against Tabor was a great opportunity for the Whalers to match up against one of the best all-time sailing programs in New England. The conditions were not ideal at the start of the day as the wind was blowing only around three knots from the northeast. As a result, the first three varsity races were sailed in light and fluky conditions that the Whalers have seen only once all season.
