For the first time this season, the varsity softball team faced some top-level competition on the diamond. Nantucket played host to Tantasqua for a doubleheader Saturday, and the well-disciplined and highly-skilled squad from western Massachusetts took both games from the Whalers, earning the win in the opener 9-2 and then running away with a slaughter-rule-shortened 21-1 victory in game two.

Also this week, the Whalers (7-2) easily defeated Diman 17-1.

Tantasqua, which improved to 10-4 overall this season with the two wins, plays in Division I Central as a member of the South Worcester County League.

“That’s a very good division-one team. We won’t see anybody that plays like that, not even in tournament play,” head coach Chris Maury said. “We put them on the schedule because we want to play that kind of team that’s a challenge for us. It’s a good gauge as to where we are.”
