The junior varsity boys lacrosse team lost 8-3 to a tough Barnstable squad on the road Sunday.
The Whalers are still looking for their first win of the season at 0-5 overall with rematches against Martha’s Vineyard and Barnstable on tap this week.
“Barnstable is always a good lacrosse team. They never have trouble getting enough kids to play and they are always well coached and a pretty disciplined team. They play with a lot of good intensity,” head coach Mark Latter said.
The Red Raiders came out flashing some of that intensity early Sunday, scoring three goals in the first quarter to jump on top of the Whalers. They added three more in the second to take the 6-1 lead at the break.
“At halftime we talked about packing it in on defense, so the slides came quicker and that seemed to help out a lot. Before we were a little too spread out and they were finding space,” Latter said.
The two squads played even lacrosse in the second half, each scoring twice.
The Whalers were playing without their three starting attackmen and with only three long-poles due to injury and missing players.
Riley Wynn, Hunter Stojak and Mack McGrath scored for Nantucket against a tight Red Raider defensive scheme.
Dillon Crosby and Troy Huyser played well after making second-half adjustments on the defensive end of the field.
