The varsity sailing team had a busy weekend of head-to-head sailing, losing three out of four matches and their perfect season.

In the Whalers’ first dual-meet sailing in over a week, top-notch Tabor Academy came to the island Saturday and swept three straight races from both the varsity and junior varsity teams. On Sunday Nantucket traveled to Barnstable where they defeated Bourne 3-1 before falling twice to Barnstable, 3-1 in a best of five series and 2-1 in a best of three series.

Nantucket fell to 4-3 overall and out of first place in the Cape & Islands League.

The Whalers, who have had multiple meets postponed due to weather, traveled to Barnstable Sunday despite the continuing rainy weather. All races between the three teams were competed on a digital N course in a fairly consistent wind of 10-12 miles per hour.

In the first series of the day, the Whalers had an easy time defeating Bourne. The Canalmen won the first race with a one-two finish, but Nantucket took the next three races, highlighted by one-two-three sweeps in the second and third races.

Skipper Annie Sager with crew Julianne Costello took first place in the second and third races with Adam Ceely with Jesse Lang and Sarah Erichsen with Meaghan Lynch taking second and third, respectively.

The Whalers sailed twice against Barnstable so that they would have enough regattas to qualify for the Mark Trophy competition, which will be announced later this week. The two series did not help Nantucket in their quest as the Red Raiders easily took both.

In the first series, Nantucket won the first race. Sager with Costello finished first with Ceely and Lang in third for the winning combination. Barnstable took the next three races to win the series.

In the second set of races with time a factor, the two teams sailed a best of three. Nantucket again won the first race as Matt Fabiszak with Sarah Poor crossed the line first, with Ceely and Lang in third for another winning combination. Barnstable won the final two races to take the series.

“The last couple races there were a lot of good attempts at slowing down and stalling out the other team, trying to improve our positions with good attempts at mark traps,” assistant coach Mike Fleischut said.
