The defense was solid behind starting pitcher Mike Molta Tuesday afternoon as the varsity baseball team picked up a key victory at home over Blue Hills, 4-0.
Molta pitched all seven innings, allowing only three hits, while striking out nine to earn the shutout win. The Whalers played errorless ball in the field and came up with timely hitting to score two in the third and two in the fourth to earn the victory.
Nantucket improved to 7-3 overall this season and is now two wins away from a postseason bid, which the Whalers hope to wrap up this weekend. The team is scheduled to visit Sturgis Friday before hosting Newburyport for a doubleheader Sunday.
Tuesday’s victory over Blue Hills was a big step for the Whalers, who lost to the Warriors on the road 4-3 in a seventh-inning collapse early in the season.
