After taking down Dennis-Yarmouth on the road 6-4 last Thursday, the boys varsity lacrosse team struggled to contain high-powered Division I Barnstable at home Tuesday afternoon, falling 18-12.

The Whalers, who moved to 6-5 overall this season with the split, need only three wins in their final seven games to finish above .500 and earn a spot in the postseason.

“We are a playoff team,” head coach Rick Blair said. “We should be competitive with everybody we play.”

The Whalers are scheduled to host Dartmouth today before traveling to Bishop Stang Saturday and top-ranked Cohasset Tuesday.

“Offensively we can compete with most teams, we just need to shore up our defense,” Blair said. “The problem is winning the game in the middle of the field and playing good consistent defense.”
