The varsity softball team played in a few tight games this week, but with three solid starts from the center circle, picked up three quality wins and qualified for the Division III South postseason tournament.

The Whalers escaped a seventh-inning threat by Blue Hills to defeat the Warriors 6-5 at home Tuesday. The win came on the heels of a doubleheader sweep of Mashpee, which included a 12-0 win in game one and a 4-3 walk-off victory in game two at home Monday.

Also this week, the Whalers easily defeated Provincetown 30-8 at home last Wednesday.

The Whalers, who improved to 11-2 overall, were led by junior ace Kelly Reid, who dominated the opposition from the center circle, pitching 21 innings in two days, striking out 33 batters. Reid was also solid at the plate, helping her cause with six hits and four RBI in three games.

“She is picking it up with every game. She is working on her array of pitches and she is throwing them all well. We have been working real hard on the fastball trying to pick up more velocity and it’s really working and we saw a difference in the last two games,” head coach Chris Maury said.

The Whalers have seven games remaining on the regular-season schedule to prepare for the postseason, including a home game against Bishop Connolly this afternoon.

Against Blue Hills Tuesday, the Whalers were in control early, scoring three times in the first inning and another three in the second. Emily Snell drove in two runs with a single in the first, and in the second Shantel Hanniford and Reid had the big knocks to give the Whalers some cushion.
