Despite being mathematically eliminated from postseason contention, the varsity girls lacrosse team is gaining some momentum and playing well down the final stretch of the season, winning two of four games this week.

The Whalers defeated Sturgis handily last Friday 20-7 and topped Plymouth South 12-4 Monday, both at home.

Also this week, Nantucket lost a well-played game against Bishop Stang at home Saturday 15-11 and fell at Dartmouth 11-6 Thursday.

The Whalers improved to 6-10 overall with three games on the road remaining to close out the regular-season schedule. Nantucket is scheduled to visit Barnstable Friday and then make the trip to Martha’s Vineyard Saturday.
This week the Whalers got solid games from junior goalie Theresa Head and breakout offensive performances from senior midfielder Riley Fredericks.

“(Head) has had some really great games. She was very aggressive, making a lot of saves in each game. She is trying new things with her defense and how she is going to clear out the ball,” head coach Amy Knapp said.

Fredericks led all scorers this week scoring four goals against Sturgis and Plymouth South and notching a season-high five goals against Bishop Stang.

“This week she has really stepped out of her shell,” Knapp said. “She has been going to net. Not only going to net hard, but also going to net left-handed. She is catching the ball in tight and trying new things and she is placing her shots beautifully.”
