The Whalers sailing team hosted Dennis-Yarmouth Tuesday afternoon and defeated the Dolphins for the third time this season. Nantucket’s 2-1 victory on a wet and miserable day solidified the squad as one of the top three teams in the Cape & Island’s East Division.

Also this week, the Whalers hosted the first-ever Women’s Cape & Islands Fleet Racing Championship Friday. Ten women’s sailing teams, representing 10 of the 12 teams in the Cape & Islands League, competed.

Other than slight fog, the conditions on Nantucket were almost perfect for sailing Friday with the wind out of the southwest varying in strength from 10 to 15 knots. The teams sailed nine races on a windward leeward course and the competition was tight with six teams having a shot at winning going into the last race.

The eventual winner was the team from Dennis-Yarmouth with skipper and co-captain Kelsey Lotti with crew and co-captain Liz Glivinski. Second place went to Barnstable and third to Martha’s Vineyard. D-Y and Barnstable sailed consistent regattas with both teams including seven top-three finishes in their overall scores.
