The varsity baseball team needed one more win this week to earn a spot in the Division III South postseason tournament, and pulled it out at South Shore Voke Monday with a 7-3 victory Monday.
“I am proud of them right now. They stepped it up yesterday. They needed it. After a couple tough losses there in doubleheaders, the confidence was going down. They bounced back,” head coach Nick Duarte said.
The Whalers have been struggling recently against some top-quality opponents, dropping two at Pembroke in a doubleheader Saturday 7-0 and 12-0, and then after the clinching victory, fell at home to Bishop Connolly 3-2 Tuesday.
“When we get to the playoffs, I think we should be ready. Everything is clicking. We know our bunt plays. We know the mental part, it is just putting it together with the physical part,” Duarte said.
The Whalers had set a goal of returning to the playoffs this spring after being knocked out of the tournament in the first round last season.
“We set our goal and we met it. We got to the playoffs. Now the second goal is to win the one playoff game and keep it going. Hopefully we get to do that,” Duarte said.
Division III South tournament pairings will be announced Tuesday.
Against Bishop Connolly at home Tuesday, the Whalers struggled out of the gate. The Cougars arrived late and the Whalers had been hanging around taking warm-ups for an hour.
