The junior varsity baseball team used flawless defense and solid pitching to shut out Sturgis 4-0 last Thursday afternoon at home.

The victory was the third in the last four games for the Whalers, who improved to 3-4. Nantucket was scheduled to host Mashpee in the season finale yesterday, too late for this edition of Sports.

The Whalers’ win Thursday was the direct result of an improvement in play in the field.

“We played outstanding defense (against Sturgis). We made some great plays,” head coach Dennis Caron said.
