Sailing takes fourth at championships

The varsity sailing team competed in both the Cape & Islands Fleet Racing and Team Racing championships this weekend, finishing a strong fourth in each regatta. Also this week, the Whalers hosted Chatham in the final team race regatta of the season and won 5-0.


Nantucket finished the season at 10-7 overall, reaching the 10-win mark for the second straight year. The Whalers finished the season ranked 24th in New England out of the 91 teams that make up the New England Schools Sailing Association.


Tuesday against Chatham the Whalers got off to a great start with all three Nantucket boats winning their position on the line. Jesse Lang with Sorrel Gregoire went out with an early lead and Adam Ceely did a great pass-back maneuver moving Ocean Kane up to second. When Ceely finished in third, the Whalers won with the best possible combination: a one-two-three.


In race two, Mariah Jones with Abergavenny Whiteford subbed in for Lang and both Jones and Kane had horrible starts that put them in fifth and sixth. Ceely rounded first and started maneuvering against the other three Chatham boats and by the leeward mark he and Ashleigh Inglis had been able to move Kane into first and Jones up to fourth while he held onto the third position. After great boat-handling Kane was able to take the lead and Ceely placed third and Jones fourth, giving Nantucket the win..
