The varsity softball team added two more wins at home this week, taking out Dennis-Yarmouth 15-2 Thursday and Diman 16-1 Tuesday. Mental mistakes and lack of timely hitting cost the Whalers two games in a doubleheader at Pembroke, however, where they lost 4-3 and 5-4 Saturday.
The Whalers, who improved to 14-5 overall, were scheduled to host Chatham yesterday in the regular-season finale, too late for this edition of Sports. Division III South postseason tournament pairings are scheduled to be announced Tuesday.
While the offense has proven it can hold its own this season, defense is the main concern for the Whalers heading forward into the playoffs.
“We can’t make the mental mistakes we are making in these ballgames and expect to win in tournament play,” head coach Chris Maury said.
The squad is already working on a few specific things in the last regular season games and practices. Against Diman, four-year starting shortstop Lindsay Fry made the switch to third base, with second-baseman Morgan Tornovish filling it at shortstop.
