Second-half surge lifts boys lacrosse

The boys varsity lacrosse team closed out the regular season on a winning note, capitalizing on a strong second half to put away Plymouth South 18-11 at home last Wednesday.


The Whalers finished the season at 10-8 overall and earned the 22nd seed in the 28-team Division III East postseason tournament. The Whalers were scheduled to visit 11th-seeded Manchester-Essex (13-5) of the Cape Ann Small League yesterday, too late for this edition of Sports.


Also this week, four players on the team earned league honors. Taylor Thayer was named First Team All-Maritime League. The senior attack led the Whalers this season with 53 goals and 48 assists in 18 games. Midfielder Jamison Viera and defender Jon Higgins were named honorable mention members of the All-Maritime League team. Assistant coach Marsh Chambers was named Maritime League assistant coach of the year.


Led by their all-stars, the Whalers had their final tune-up for the postseason last Wednesday at home against Plymouth South. It was the second home game of the season against the Panthers. When Nantucket traveled to Plymouth South earlier this month, the game never happened due to a mix-up that left them with no officials. The Panthers agreed to travel to the island for the make-up game. lead at 4-2, but relinquishing the advantage before the end of the half at 6-6.
