Kelly Reid tossed a one-hitter and the varsity softball team cruised to an 11-0 victory over Chatham in the regular-season finale last Wednesday at home.

The Whalers, who finished the regular season at 16-4 overall, drew the third seed in the Division III South postseason tournament and will host 14th-seeded Bishop Connolly in the first round of the playoffs today at 5 p.m.

Three teams finished the season tied with a .800 winning percentage and Nantucket’s name was picked out of the hat first to take the highest seed and the benefit of a possible second home game later in the week.

The Whalers also earned a date with a familiar opponent. Nantucket defeated the Cougars twice this season: on the road 13-2 in early April and at home 12-4 in mid May.

“I think we have to look at it as a whole new season. Even though we have beaten Bishop Connolly twice we have to look at them as a tournament-quality team and we have to go out and do what we know what we can do,” head coach Chris Maury said.

The Whalers know they can hit the ball and put up runs against quality opponents. Nantucket outscored the opposition 243-76 through 20 games this season, averaging more than 12 runs per contest. The Whalers will have to focus on defense to protect against the Cougars using small ball to scratch across runs.
