The third-seeded varsity softball team advanced to the semifinal round of the Division III South Sectional postseason tournament for the fourth straight season this week. Nantucket beat 14th-seeded Bishop Connolly 7-0 in the first round Thursday and sixth-seeded Blue Hills 12-3 in the quarterfinals Monday, both at home.

The Whalers, who improved to 18-4 overall, drew a match-up against second-seeded Harwich (19-3) in Taunton yesterday, too late for this edition of Sports

“They go out and work their tails off every day,” head coach Chris Maury said. “I like the energy. I like the enthusiasm. I think we are gaining confidence.”

The Whalers, who have seen plenty of success in the postseason tournament over the last four years, lost in the semifinals in Taunton in 2007 and 2008 before defeating West Bridgewater last season to advance to face Cohasset in the finals. The Whalers lost to the top-seeded team 1-0 in the final inning.

“The consistency of being at that level every year, it has to help you going in,” Maury said.
