The varsity boys soccer team earned its second win of the season, its second straight shutout and its second victory over a Lighthouse Conference opponent Thursday when it shut down Sturgis at home 5-0.

Carlos Portillo and Emerson Guzman each scored twice and tallied one assist apiece as the Whalers appear to be in a groove early in the season.

“It is a good way to build some confidence and work on the style of team we want to be and the type of players we want to have. It has also given me a little bit of an opportunity to test the waters with guys in certain spots. Things are still in flux as far as starting lineups and who plays where and these were good games to do that,” said head coach Rich Brannigan, referring to the win over Sturgis and the opening-game victory over Cape Cod Academy last week.
