(Oct. 1, 2009) Pope John Paul II capitalized on multiple Nantucket fumbles as the junior varsity football team defeated the JV Whalers 14-0 Monday afternoon.

“We were definitely evenly matched, but it was one of those games where we won a lot of battles, but we lost the war,” junior varsity head coach Vaughan Machado said.

The Whalers were successful moving the football between the 20-yard lines, but eight fumbles allowed Pope John Paul II excellent field position, leading to two touchdowns.

“Our defense played very well. We stunted a lot and threw their team for losses here and there, but every time we would get any offensive momentum, we would give up the football,” Machado said.
