(Oct. 15, 2009) The varsity boys soccer team clinched its seventh Lighthouse Conference title in eight years with a 4-1 victory over Cape Cod Academy at home Thursday, but then fell against undefeated Cardinal Spellman 2-0 Sunday night.

The Whalers, who improved to 8-3 overall this season and a perfect 5-0 in the league, earned an automatic berth to the Division III South Sectional Tournament with the conference title.

Nantucket has five games remaining on the schedule to tune up for the postseason, including a home game against Bishop Connolly Saturday afternoon.

“There is a lot more we want to accomplish. Winning our conference championship, which equates to qualifying for the playoffs, is pretty much an expectation of ours. Winning against Cape Cod Academy got us there, but there is a lot of work left to be done still,” head coach Rich Brannigan said.
