(Oct. 15, 2009) It wasn’t a matter of if, but when the varsity field hockey team would secure a spot in the postseason tournament. With a 3-1 victory over Fairhaven Saturday and a 2-2 tie against St. Peter-Marian Monday, the Whalers are guaranteed a record of .500 or better and have therefore qualified for the fall dance.

The Whalers improved to 8-2-1 with six games to play. Nantucket will host back-to-back home games this weekend, facing Ursuline Academy Saturday and Marshfield Sunday. Marshfield is responsible for one of the Whalers’ two losses this season, a 1-0 defeat on the road.

“Now we focus on getting our seeding up. We have six games left. We obviously want to win the six games,” head coach Lori Moran said.
