The Nantucket golf team traveled to Martha’s Vineyard last Wednesday for the final match of the regular season, ultimately falling to the rivals 209-231.
The Whalers finished up the regular season at 11-2 overall with the only two losses coming against the Martha’s Vineyard squad. The strong Whalers team was missing three of its top six golfers due to illness and schoolwork following a busy schedule at the end of the season.
Bram Daly and Taylor Thayer led Nantucket out of the one and two spots, respectively, each shooting a team-low 44 on the par 35 Farm Neck Golf Club course.
The match medalist was the Vineyard’s Luke Pisano, who shot at 38 out of the third spot in the lineup.
Also contributing to the Whalers’ point total Wednesday were Nick Lombardi (45), Hunter Stojak (49) and Owen LaFarge (50).
With five out of six matches on the road in the final two weeks of the season, the Whalers clinched its fourth straight Lighthouse Conference championship at a perfect 6-0 last week.
“We had a brutal last two weeks of the season with five of the last six matches being away. That took a toll on our team’s health and school work, and of course, health and academics come first. Especially when we have already qualified for the postseason and had already won the Lighthouse League,” head coach Michael Horton said.
Up next for Nantucket will be the Cape & Islands Schoolboy tournament Friday followed by the Division III South Sectionals on Tuesday. Both matches will be held at Bayberry Hills in Dennis Yarmouth.
Daly, LaFarge and Henry Toole will be representing Nantucket in the Cape & Islands Schoolboy Friday and taking notes to bring to their teammates regarding the course.
On Tuesday top four golfers Amanda Levy, Daly, Thayer and Toole will lead the Whalers at the sectional tournament. Riley Wynn, LaFarge, Lombardi, Stojak and Allison Levy are all challenging for the final two post season positions.
