Midfielder Riley Fredericks gets locked up against an Ursuline defender during Saturday’s 5-0 victory.

(Oct. 22, 2009)The varsity field hockey team has rarely given the opposition a chance this season. The playoff-bound Whalers squad tallied its eighth shutout in 12 games this season with a 5-0 victory over visiting Ursuline Academy Saturday afternoon.

Sunday’s anticipated rematch against Marshfield, which defeated Nantucket 1-0 earlier in the season, was postponed to this coming Sunday due to bad weather last week.

With the victory over Ursuline, Nantucket improved to 9-2-1 overall with five games remaining before the postseason tournament.

“It is a tough week coming up with Marshfield and then going away to Norwood (Saturday), going to Cohasset (Monday) and ending with Mashpee (Wednesday). We have a long week ahead of us, but it is great scheduling getting us into the tournament,” head coach Lori Moran said. “You want those tough opponents going into tournament. That’s the level we are going to see the week after that.”
