Following a 3-0 loss at the Vineyard last Wednesday, the junior varsity boys soccer team rebounded to defeat Cohasset 2-0 on the road Tuesday.

The Whalers (5-3-2) mixed up the lineup against Cohasset, moving speedy midfielder Ocean Kane to the outside with Will Horyn while Tanner O’Keefe played at center midfield distributing the ball.

The move paid off as the Whalers featured a much more formidable attack. Ten minutes into the first half, Shaun Stojak tried to play a ball through to Kane, but it deflected off two Skippers defenders and landed at the feet of O’Keefe who punched it in for the goal.

Holding a 1-0 advantage, goalie Colin Kohler made a diving save off a corner kick in front of the net late in the first half to protect the lead.

In the second half, the Whalers tallied an insurance goal. Jimmy Dalzell took a free kick from 10 yards beyond midfield. In an attempt to connect with a teammate, Dalzell put the ball in the net for the 2-0 lead.

Against the Vineyard the Whalers struggled to win the midfield game.

“I was stressing winning the 50-50 balls in the middle, and send the ball into the corners into some dangerous spots on the field where we could get some good attacks, but we weren’t winning some of those individual battles and it was hard for us to possess the ball,” head coach Rob Sulzer said.

The Vineyard scored on a free kick in the 13th minute and then added a second goal right before the half on a header off a corner kick. They would add their final score of the game later in the second half after winning a 50-50 ball in the middle, carrying it down the sideline and scoring.
