The varsity boys soccer team concluded its regular season with the type of game the coaching staff would like to see in the playoffs: a complete one. The Whalers played hard from start to finish at Coyle Cassidy Tuesday, scoring early to take the lead and again late to seal the 3-0 victory.
“If we looked at today’s game, we had a complete game, from all of our players. We needed to see hunger. We needed to see playoff energy,” head coach Rich Brannigan said. “Going on the road for four games (to end the season) is great preparation for the playoffs and we played three really good opponents. I think the team is feeling good about the way they ended the season. It is good to have 11 wins.”
The Whalers lost at Weston 4-1 Saturday before defeating Sturgis 8-1 Monday to wrap up a perfect Lighthouse Conference schedule at 6-0. Nantucket will head into the postseason with a final regular season record of 11-5 overall.
Division III South Sectional tournament pairings will be announced today. The Whalers expect to play a first-round game in the second half of the weekend or early next week.
“We need a complete game out of everybody. We need short, crisp passes. We need guys stealing the ball, winning the ball and getting up and moving off the ball. One guy can’t carry a team. It has got to be a team effort. They have to trust their teammates,” Brannigan said.
