(Nov. 5 , 2009)Any fan of Nantucket High School athletics could not help but crack a smile when the Division II South Sectional field hockey tournament pairings were announced Monday morning.

The Whalers, who finished the regular season 13-2-2, drew the five-seed and possibly the most anticipated tournament matchup of the fall: Martha’s Vineyard.

The traditional island rivals – who have not clashed in any sport this fall – will go to battle Friday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. on Nantucket.

“How can you get a better matchup? They are tough. It is going to be a finals atmosphere. The girls are psyched,” head coach Lori Moran said.

In the final two games of the regular season this week, the Whalers beat Mashpee 6-0 last Thursday before closing out the schedule with an unsatisfying 1-1 tie at Norwood. Now, all eyes are on Friday’s contest.
