Thirteen swimmers from the Nantucket Dolphins youth swim team took part in the USS Team Specialty swim meet hosted by the Cape Cod Swim Club at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy last weekend.
The Nantucket swimmers have combined with 29 USS swimmers from the Willy’s East Swim Team from Eastham to form Willy’s/Nantucket Swimming (WACK) this season. The USS meets are designed to be a starting point of all age-group swimming across the country with the final goal being the Olympics.
Among the Nantucket competitors were Sophie Davies, Alexa Dragon, Dakota Dragon, Katie Fox, Cara Garufi, Beau Garufi, Miles Geddes, Nicole Gottlieb, Isabelle Roberts, Matias Sejersen, Tyler Wheeler, Maggie Wiggin and Ashley Wilson.
Davies competed in nine events, finishing fourth and qualifying for the age-group championships in the 11- and 12-year-old 100-yard freestyle in 1:01.70. She finished sixth in the 500-yard freestyle (6:11.46) and the 200-yard freestyle (2:19.93). She also competed in the 100-yard individual medley (1:19.71), the 50-yard butterfly (36.27), the 100-yard backstroke (1:17.70), the 50-yard freestyle (28.83), the 200-yard individual medley (2:51.23) and the 50-yard backstroke (36.81).
Alexa Dragon competed in five events for WACK: the 100-yard backstroke (1:16.88), the 100-yard freestyle (1:03.28), the 200-yard freestyle (2:21.30), the 100-yard butterfly (1:14.22) and the 50-yard freestyle (28.56).
Dakota Dragon swam in six events in the 9- and 10-year-old division, placing fourth in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:39.87 and sixth in the 100-yard individual medley (1:25.57) and the 200-yard individual medley (3:03.04). Dragon also competed in the 50-yard freestyle (33.73), the 100-yard freestyle (1:14.80) and the 50-yard backstroke (42.42).
Katie Fox finished sixth in the 9- and 10-year old 100-yard backstroke in 1:29.81. She also competed in the 50-yard freestyle (34.33), the 50-yard breaststroke (48.47), the 100-yard freestyle (1:15.56) and the 50-yard backstroke (42.67).
Cara Garufi swam in seven events for WACK: the 100-yard backstroke (1:14.65), the 100-yard freestyle (1:03.88), the 200-yard breaststroke (2:56.15), the 200-yard freestyle (2:19.28), the 500-yard freestyle (6:07.02), the 100-yard breaststroke (1:22.82) and the 50-yard freestyle (29.55).
Beau Garufi placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:04.87, third in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:24.05 and fifth in the 100-yard freestyle in 52.20. Garufi also swam in the 200-yard freestyle (1:59.40), the 500-yard freestyle (5:26.34) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:12.16).
Miles Geddes competed in seven events for WACK: the 400-yard individual medley (5:12.29), the 100-yard backstroke (1:09.75), the 100-yard freestyle (1:00.53), the 200-yard freestyle (2:!3.47), the 200-yard individual medley (2:30.38), the 200-yard backstroke (2:30.10) and the 50-yard freestyle (27.19).
Nicole Gottlieb placed in a Nantucket-high six events. She finished third in the 9- and 10-year-old 200-yard freestyle in 2:38.09 and the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:42.38. Gottlieb placed fourth in the 100-yard individual medley in 1:25.51, fifth in the 50-yard butterfly in 38.11, and sixth in the 50-yard freestyle (33.40) and the 100-yard freestyle (1:12.82). She also swam the 50-yard breaststroke (46.57) and the 50-yard backstroke (41.00).
Isabelle Roberts finished second in the 9- and 10-year old 100-yard breaststroke in 1:36.79 and fourth in the 100-yard individual medley (1:25.51) and the 50-yard breaststroke (44.11). Roberts also competed in the 50-yard freestyle (34.81) and the 100-yard freestyle (1:17.03).
Sejersen competed in nine events for WACK, finishing sixth in the 11- and 12-year-old 100-yard breaststroke in 1:34.06. He also swam the 100-yard IM (1:21.95), the 50-yard butterfly (39.51), the 100-yard backstroke (1:25.43), the 50-yard freestyle (32.10), the 200-yard IM (2:57.15), the 50-yard breaststroke (43.07), the 100-yard freestyle (1:09.49) and the 50-yard backstroke (41.06).
Tyler Wheeler placed in four out of five events, finishing fourth in the 9- and 10-year-old 50-yard butterfly (38.06), fifth in the 50-yard freestyle (33.23) and sixth in both the 200-yard freestyle (2:40.37) and the 100-yard freestyle (1:13.96). Wheeler also swam in the 50-yard backstroke (42.80).
Maggie Wiggin swam seven events in the 11- and 12-year-old age group: the 100-yard IM (1:30.72), the 100-yard backstroke (1:33.89), the 50-yard freestyle (41.58), the 100-yard breaststroke (1:39.62), the 50-yard breaststroke (46.79), the 100-yard freestyle (1:28.77) and the 50-yard backstroke (46.21).
Ashley Wilson also competed in seven events for WACK: the 500-yard freestyle (6:19.89), the 100-yard IM (1:15.73), the 200-yard freestyle (2:20.49), the 50-yard freestyle (30.09), the 200-yard IM (2:42.59), the 100-yard freestyle (1:05.73) and the 50-yard backstroke (39.93).
