(Dec. 10, 2009) The varsity girls swimming and diving team is looking for a change in results this season. With the addition of a small, but skilled freshman class and two key swimmers returning to the pool this season, the Whalers are poised to improve on their 1-4-1 performance last season.

For the second year in a row, the girls team does not have a lot of depth to fill out the line-up, especially in the secondary strokes. However, the addition of the four swimmers should help the Whalers improve on where they finished last season.

“The freshmen is where we are really going to look to build our lineup around,” head coach Jim Pignato said of his two incoming swimmers and Dolphins swim team stand-outs Alexa Dragon and Cara Garufi.

“With the experience of that freshman group, we can really do a lot more than we could do last year. Last year injuries really hurt us, having Theresa (Head) and Carly (Jensen), our two best swimmers, out. We get them back and we are adding two freshmen, so we are really adding four people we really didn’t have last year,” he continued.

Juniors Theresa Head and Carly Jensen are back in the water this year and ready to pace the squad during competition. Look for Head to lead the Whalers in the sprint events alongside Jensen, who will also contribute in the backstroke.
