(Dec. 10, 2009) The junior varsity hockey team got a tune-up for the regular season Sunday when the Groton-Dunstable varsity squad came to town and defeated the Whalers 10-1 in a preseason scrimmage.

Despite the lopsided score, head coach Jack Moran was focused on getting all of his players playing time and identifying areas that need work in preparation for the season opener Sunday night at home against Abington.

“We played every single person we had, including four different goalies. We wanted to give everyone the opportunity to get out there and play. I was not at all concerned over what the score was. I wanted to see the kids out there playing and see how they looked,” the second-year head coach said.

The Whalers biggest struggles came in backchecking, especially as exhaustion set in late in the game and power-play opportunities were missed. Nantucket earned 14 power plays and capitalized only once.
